Terms of Service

Welcome to Hazel Reads. By using our app or website you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use Hazel Reads.

1. Who Can Use Hazel Reads

Hazel Reads is intended for use by parents, guardians, and educators on behalf of children. You must be at least 18 years old to create an account. Children should use the app under adult supervision.

2. Accounts

You are responsible for keeping your account credentials secure. Each account may have multiple child profiles. You agree to provide accurate information and to keep it up to date.

3. Stories and Content

Stories are generated by AI (Claude by Anthropic) based on choices your child makes. We do our best to keep generated content appropriate for young readers, but AI output can be unpredictable. If you encounter anything concerning, please let us know.

Stories you create are stored in your account. We may use anonymized, aggregated story data (e.g., which phonics levels are most popular, average story length) to improve the product. We will never publish or share your child's individual stories with third parties without your consent.

4. Subscriptions and Payments

Hazel Reads offers free and paid plans. Current pricing and limits are listed on our Pricing page. Pricing and usage limits may change with reasonable notice.

Paid subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled before the renewal date. We reserve the right to introduce or adjust fair-use limits on any plan to ensure service quality for all users. If we reduce limits on a plan you are currently subscribed to, the change will take effect at your next renewal — not mid-cycle.

A parental gate appears before any purchase, so a grown-up must complete a simple verification before a subscription or story pack can be bought. Subscriptions are billed through your app store account and can be managed or cancelled in your device Settings.

5. Advertising

Hazel Reads does not currently display ads. If we introduce advertising in the future, we commit to the following:

  • Ads will never be shown directly to children during reading sessions.
  • We will never serve behaviorally targeted ads to children or use children's data for ad targeting.
  • Any ads will be clearly distinguishable from app content.
  • We will update these terms and notify you before any advertising is introduced.

6. Intellectual Property

The Hazel Reads name, design, and phonics engine are our property. AI-generated stories are provided for your personal, non-commercial use. You may share stories with family and friends but may not redistribute them commercially.

7. Termination

You can delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms. On termination, your data will be deleted in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

8. Disclaimers

Hazel Reads is provided "as is." We make no guarantees about the educational outcomes of using the app. The app is a supplemental reading tool, not a replacement for classroom instruction or professional reading support.

9. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. We'll notify you of material changes via email or an in-app notice. Continued use after changes take effect means you accept the updated terms.
